Our Story

We’ve Come So Far Since 2017

With a desire to give back running in her blood, a Mexican American Muslim Convert small group of the University of Houston students came together in 2006 to work on a community service project. What they discovered was the spark that ignited their growing passion to serving resettled refugees. Uncovering the large scale of unmet needs of thousands of resettled refugees in their own city, they began to collect food, clothing, furniture and even funds for distribution. They quickly realized that fulfilling only short-term and immediate needs was not enough to fully support the many newcomers to the city.

Fueled by a drive to revolutionize the industry, in 2008 Amaanah Refugee Services was officially established. As the heart and soul of this organization, Amaanah’s team has grown exponentially to meet the ever-growing needs of our homeless problem in Houston, Texas. Through our focused programs and events, in 2016 we touched the lives of more than 10,000 resettled refugees in Texas.

From our humble beginnings in Houston, we have now planted our roots in Austin, the state capital. We are tirelessly working to set the foundation for our future growth in Texas and beyond. We thank you for your support and hope you will continue with us on this journey.

What We Do

Outreach in the Barrio is focused on alleviating adversities within our local homelessness and low-income communities.  Restoring dignity, compassion, no judgment or discrimination.

  • Create programs with participating restaurants, supermarkets, and vendors, to avoid wasting food, while encouraging others to join the movement.
  • We have developed a 2 X weekly feedings to our homeless neighbours in Downtown Houston, Texas. Providing full course healthy meals, water, hygiene packages, clothing, shoes. As of March 27, 2018 Outreach in the Barrio has served over 10,000 +  full course meals to our local homeless neighbours. We have also distributed over 2,000+ hygiene packages, blankets, umbrellas, rain panchos, emergency blankets etc.
  • Inspire others to take action:  We consistently serve whole-heartedly, are dedicated to the mission and encourage others to take action within their own local barrios to help alleviate the human suffering across the nation. – With our mentoring and guidance, on November 4, 2018, a Non Profit Organization based in Chicago Illinois initiated a program like ours called Neighborly Deeds and is now serving the homeless on a weekly basis while having the participating donors avoid WASTING FOOD. We also have a group of concerned citizens of Dallas, Texas who we are currently looking into implementing our system and we look forward in collaborating in this region.
  • Continue creating programs to be resourceful and create programs that will be significant programs to truly make a difference.

As of March of 2017, we have delivered resources to underserved, low-income communities

Stories

The intention was to use the last quarter of the month to dedicate it to the displaced in Houston, Texas.  OIB Harvey Caravan effort had ended during the end of September of 2017.  The last quarter of the month kicked in and not knowing where to start, Noor Morales looked into joining an organization that was already serving the homeless.  At that time she could only find 1 organization that is feeding once per month.  After having joined them a few times, Noor was inspired to organize an event for Outreach In The Barrio but not only feed but have a full event.  “We wanted to provide free haircuts, hygiene kits, entertainment and of course a delicious healthy meal”.
